If the city of Chicago was a person…

… I’d kick it in the nuts.  Read why after the jump.

My commute has gradually gotten worse every day. I guess it’s not really the city’s fault the CTA sucks, but it’s the city’s fault that they wanted to be more like New York rather than, say, Boise, Idaho.

Mayor Daley doesn’t really seem to give two shits about our public transportation service. It’s old, slow, over-crowded and dirty, just like an 80-year old prostitute. This city claims they want the Olympics so bad, yet they can’t fix something as crucial as public transportation.

What’s worse, is these service cuts haven’t even gone into affect, yet. Fuck knows what it will be like when they do. If the government does come through and bail them out I expect to see a complete turn-around in service.

I have left at the same time everyday for the last week: 7:15 AM. Sometimes even sooner. I used to refuse to get on crowded buses, now I have no choice. Before, one crowded bus would go by and then the next one would be empty. Now four go by all packed to the door, so even if you wanted to get on you can’t. Usually by the time the fifth bus arrives I can usually squeeze on.

I used to think the train was the worst thing about public transportation in this city, now it’s like a race to see who is the shittiest. We’re screwed no matter who wins.

I could take the train each day, but our apartment is about a 20 minute walk from the train station and when it gets to be January and it’s minus twelve degrees, the last thing you want to do is walk for 20 minutes.

I’ve done both options and with the walk I have to endure, the train ends up being no quicker.

I’m considering switching my work day from 8-5 to 9-6. I don’t WANT to do that, but the commute might be faster. If it is, my day would actually be shorter working 9-6 than it would be working 8-5.

For example, if I worked 8-5, to actually make it to work on time I need to leave about 7. Since the commute home is even worse, I don’t get home until about 6 (most of the time even later because I can rarely leave on-time). If I work 9-6, I would probably leave each day a little before 8:30 and get home about 6:30.  That’s an hour I shave off my commute time in one day, 5 hours a week.

Who knows though, the later commute could be just as bad as the early commute.

If I could back I would have moved to the burbs instead. It may not be all that much cheaper, but at least I wouldn’t have to put up with some douchenozzle stepping on my foot or listening to some trixie blab away on her cell phone.

That’s not a good way to start a morning.

I’ve also been battling a very bad head cold. These problems only intensify when the only thing you want to do is lay down in bed and die peacefully.

ugh.. i’m glad I’m not you, buddy. I guess buying a car wouldn’t help?

We have a car. Problem is it’s, on average, $13 a day to park your car downtown. (VERY few businesses downtown offer free parking). So, if you do the math, it’s over $260 a month just to park your car, and that’s not counting gas. With gas we’d be paying more than twice as much to drive than we would to ride public transporation.

Plus, we only have one car and I work in the Loop and she works a little farther NE of downtown than I do.
