Lunar eclipse Tuesday only friendly to some
August 27th, 2007 9:02 am
As many have probably heard, there will be a total lunar eclipse in the early morning hours of Tuesday. Unfortunately for Americans, if you want to see it you’re going to have to stay up very late (or get up very early).
I’m not going to bore you with the details of a lunar eclipse. If you want to read more about it check out this or this (both via Bad Astronomy).
After the jump check out a table I re-created to show which event you can see in your time zone.
| Partial Eclipse Begins | 4:51 AM | 3:51 AM | 2:51 AM | 1:51 AM |
| Total Eclipse Begins | 5:52 AM | 4:52 AM | 3:52 AM | 2:52 AM |
| Mid-Eclipse | 6:37 AM | 5:37 AM | 4:37 AM | 3:37 AM |
| Total Eclipse Ends | 7:22 AM | 6:22 AM | 5:22 AM | 4:22 AM |
| Partial Eclipse Ends | 8:24 AM | 7:24 AM | 6:24 AM | 5:24 AM |
As you can see, North Americans only have about a half-hour time period in which they can see a total eclipse. To see it, those on the East Coast would have to get up early, and those on the west coast would have to stay up late.
I don’t think we can see the moon out of our 15th floor apartment. If we can, I’ll probably get up to try abd see it. If not, I’m not waking up at 4:50 and going outside. I’ll take my sleepy thank you.
two words - spectacular letdown.
My cat woke me up so we could watch the eclipse, it just looked like half a moon. I only watched it for a few minutes, but yeah. Solar eclipses are where it’s at, the rest are just poseurs.
You set your cat to wake you up at a specific time?
